A native Floridian, Richard attended the University of Miami and Boston University before graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He continued his education at the University of Florida and graduated from its law school in 1981 with honors and as a member of the prestigious Law Review. To further his education, Richard returned to law school at the University of Miami and earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) Degree in Estate Planning in 1995.
Richard's involvement in the community includes service as President of the North Dade Bar Association and President of The Forum of North Dade.
